Open Lab.: the bed bugs (28 Feb. 2026)

Real-Ento Open Lab: Advancing Bed Bug Management Through Collaboration Real-Ento recently convened stakeholders from academia, industry, government, and non-governmental organizations to explore real-world challenges associated with bed bugs and to foster transdisciplinary solutions. The program began with an introduction to the basic biology and life cycle of bed bugs. Mr. Taki shared foundational insights gained from his insect science coursework during his exchange program. This was followed by presentations from two final-year students, Ms. Nom and Mr. Nok, who discussed their research on bed bug mating and blood-feeding behavior, highlighting innovative approaches to management beyond sole reliance on pesticides. Dr. Chris concluded the morning session by addressing current bed bug-related issues, particularly within Thailand’s hospitality sector. All speakers encouraged open discussion, inviting participants to share experiences and practical challenges from the field. In the afternoon session, participants were divided into groups to examine four real-world scenarios: infestations in hotels, student dormitories, and among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and migrant workers. These discussions focused on identifying barriers to effective bed bug control in each context. Each group then proposed targeted intervention strategies, including the development of liquid toxic baits, improved monitoring traps, and enhanced educational programs for hotel staff and other stakeholders. A hands-on laboratory session allowed participants to observe bed bug specimens—including eggs, nymphs, and adults—and to learn about laboratory culturing techniques using an artificial membrane feeding system. This practical experience provided valuable insight into bed bug biology and behavior. The event concluded with a group photo and an exchange of contact information, fostering ongoing collaboration among participants. Stay tuned for upcoming Real-Ento Open Lab courses.
